Infused pre-rolls, explained

Infused pre-rolls, explained

If you've looked at a menu lately and seen "infused" pre-rolls priced higher than the regular ones, you might be wondering what the fuss is about. Here's the plain version.

What is an infused pre-roll?

A regular pre-roll is just ground flower rolled into a cone, a ready-to-go joint. An infused pre-roll takes that flower and adds a cannabis concentrate to it: things like distillate, live resin, rosin, or diamonds (more on those in our concentrates guide). The concentrate might be mixed into the flower, coated on the outside, or both.

The result is a pre-roll with more potency and, depending on what's added, more flavour. It's the difference between a regular coffee and a double-shot.

How is it different from a regular joint?

  • Higher potency. Adding concentrate raises the total THC well above what flower alone delivers.
  • More flavour, sometimes. Live resin and rosin carry a lot of the plant's natural terpenes, so infused rolls made with them can taste more like the strain they came from.
  • Slower burn. Concentrate-coated rolls tend to burn slower and more evenly.
  • A bit more to it. Because they're stronger, they're easy to share or to make last.

Common types you'll see

  • Distillate-infused: the most common and usually the most affordable. Big potency boost, lighter on flavour (distillate is mostly pure THC).
  • Live resin or rosin infused: more flavour and aroma, usually a step up in price.
  • Diamond-infused: diamonds are nearly pure THCA, so these are some of the strongest rolls on the shelf.
  • Blunts vs. cones: some infused products come as blunts (a thicker wrap) rather than standard cones.

A note on strength

Infused pre-rolls hit harder than regular flower, so if you're new to them, it's worth going slow, especially with diamond-infused rolls. You can always have more; you can't have less. If you're not sure where to start, ask our team and we'll point you to something sensible.

Why the selection is so much bigger in Ontario

This is where Quebec shoppers notice a real difference. The SQDC carries a narrow slice of the infused pre-roll category, while Ontario's private retailers stock a wide range across distillate, resin, rosin, and diamond infusions, in different sizes, strains, and brands. If infused pre-rolls are your thing, there's simply a lot more to choose from on this side of the border. (See our full SQDC comparison for the rest.)

FAQ

Are infused pre-rolls stronger than regular joints?

Yes. Adding concentrate raises the total THC above what flower delivers on its own, so they're generally noticeably stronger.

What does "infused" actually mean?

It means a cannabis concentrate (like distillate, live resin, rosin, or diamonds) has been added to the flower, mixed in, coated on, or both.

Why does the SQDC have so few?

Quebec keeps a narrower product range than Ontario's private market. Ontario stores carry a much wider infused pre-roll selection.
