Hash in Ontario vs the SQDC: why the good stuff is over the border

Hash in Ontario vs the SQDC: why the good stuff is over the border

Quebec has a serious hash tradition. Long before edibles and vapes, hash was the concentrate of choice, and Montreal's hash culture runs deep, shaped by decades of Moroccan, Lebanese, and Afghan influence. If you grew up on good hash, the legal market has been a mixed bag. Here's the honest picture, and where the border makes a real difference.

The catch: Quebec's 30% THC cap

Quebec caps THC at 30% by weight on all non-edible products, and hash counts. That's fine for traditional pressed hash and kief, which often sit under 30%. But the moment you move up to the good stuff, the cap gets in the way.

Most premium hash is well above 30% THC:

  • Traditional pressed hash (~20-40% THC): sometimes fits Quebec's cap, but only the lower end
  • Kief / dry sift (~20-50% THC): only the lower end fits
  • Bubble hash (ice-water) (~40-70% THC): rarely fits
  • Temple balls (~50-70% THC): over the line
  • Hash rosin (~70-85% THC): well over the line

So the SQDC's hash shelf is effectively limited to lower-potency pressed hash and kief. Temple balls, quality bubble hash, and hash rosin, the products a lot of hash lovers actually want, sit above the 30% line and aren't sold there.

Ontario has no provincial potency cap. We follow the federal rules, which don't limit hash by percentage, so the full range is on the table. (Full breakdown on our SQDC comparison page.)

A quick tour of the types

  • Traditional pressed hash: the classic. Moroccan, Lebanese, Afghan styles, pressed resin, hand-warmed and crumbled. Rich, mellow, familiar.
  • Kief / dry sift: trichomes sifted from flower through fine screens, no water. Sprinkle it, press it, or top a bowl.
  • Bubble hash (ice-water hash): trichomes separated in ice water and screened through micron bags. Cleaner and often stronger than pressed hash; grades run from "full melt" down.
  • Temple balls: hand-rolled hash balls, aged and heat-cured. The outer skin protects the resin inside, and they're prized for flavour and a smooth, long burn.
  • Hash rosin: bubble hash pressed under heat to squeeze out a solventless, high-potency resin. About as premium as hash gets, no chemicals involved.

What we carry

We stock hash for the way people actually like to enjoy it: traditional pressed styles for the classic experience, plus modern bubble hash, dry sift, temple balls, and hash rosin for something stronger and more flavourful. If you're after a particular style or region and we don't have it on the shelf, tell us and we'll do our best to track it down.

Being a short hop over the Ontario border (and an easy stop off Highway 417), we're an easy run for anyone in the Montreal or Quebec-side hash community who's tired of the 30% ceiling.

Enjoying hash

A few practical notes, no lectures:

  • Potency varies a lot across these types. If you're used to pressed hash and you're trying hash rosin or a temple ball, go easier than you think, they can be several times stronger.
  • Heat is your friend. Gentle warmth makes pressed hash and temple balls easier to work with and brings out the flavour.
  • Ways to enjoy it: on its own in a pipe or bong, sprinkled into or on top of flower, in a joint, or (for rosin) dabbed. Ask our team if you want a hand.

FAQ

Why doesn't the SQDC sell temple balls or hash rosin?

Quebec caps THC at 30% by weight, and those products are typically well above that (temple balls often 50-70%, hash rosin 70-85%). So they can't be sold at the SQDC. Ontario has no such cap.

Does the SQDC sell any hash?

Yes, but only what fits under the 30% limit, generally lower-potency pressed hash and kief. The higher-grade stuff isn't available there.

What's the difference between bubble hash and hash rosin?

Bubble hash is made with ice water; hash rosin is bubble hash pressed under heat into a stronger, solventless concentrate. Rosin is usually the more potent of the two.

Is it legal for a Quebec resident to buy hash in Ontario?

Adults who meet Ontario's legal age (19+) can shop at Ontario's licensed retailers. Quebec's legal age is 21. We sell only to adults 19 and over, with valid ID. For possession and travel rules, check the current federal and provincial guidance.
